Intervals - basically getting your max heart rate up really really high for a short time, but in sets. For example, jogging - jog at a slow pace for 5-10 mins to warm up. Then sprint all out for 30 seconds. Then jog for 2 min, sprint for 30 sec, jog for 2 min, sprint, and so on. This will help you with recovery and overall cardio. complexes - do heavy bag drills or shadow boxing, but mix in exercises that will force your breathing to change and work other muscles. For example, shadow box for 1 minute (include kicks / knees) then do 25 pushups, 25 situps, then shadow box again. Repeat, and mix in assorted exercises like sprawls, lunges, bicep curls, mountain climbers, and squats. This will shock your system in a way that shadow boxing alone will not do. Bas Rutten has a CD that goes through 28 minutes of drills like I outline above. It's great motivation and doesn't get boring, and it is a really killer cardio workout for MMA.

Running. This will give you the cardio you need. By the way, if you are 160 lbs, you wouldn't be a welterweight, but closer to light-heavyweight (155lbs).

Running on an eliptical.treadmills and pavement create impact on your knees that could lead to arthritis earlier in life.any form of aerobic exercise such as swimming...even holding your breath for longer periods of time every day will help boost cardio.but the best for building up good cardio is high altitude training.eat iron rich foods to help your body carry in oxygen and carry out CO2 and really push it with the aerobics to bring up your red blood cell count.lol the easy way to go is to spar.sharpen your technique and at the same time build muscle and cardio.
