Petition yanswers to create a "mixed martial arts" category?

Question: Petition yanswers to create a "mixed martial arts" category?

(Posted by: TheHonorableReese on 2009-06-14 15:25:08)

MMA fans: do you think Yahoo Answers should create a sports category for mixed martial arts, such as the UFC and Strikeforce? "Martial Arts " is too broad of a category, since it includes several complete sports such as Taekwondo, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Karate forms tournaments, and exercise- focus arts like Tai Chi. I think if "Pregnancy " and "Trying to Conceive " are different enough to have their own categories, MMA is by far unique enough to have its own as well. Here is the thread: http:/ / suggestions.yahoo.com/ detail/ ?prop=answers &fid=149043 Indeed, mixed martial arts means a combination of many different types of martial arts, so you could consider it a broad category. However, "mixed martial arts " is also a very specific category of sporting competition. Several popular organizations, most- popularly the UFC, sponsor this style of tournament fighting, and occupy a specific niche in the sporting world. Clowns: I still support a split because the "mixed martial arts " I'm talking about is the sporting event and the organizations that support it, not the concept of mixing different martial arts. Boxing and wrestling are both martial arts, by definition, but they have separate categories from martial arts because they are counted as separate sporting events. I think having the separate category would be better because "MMA " would be for questions about MMA fighters, pro and amateur events, rules, and legal equipment, whereas "martial arts " would deal with the actual styles, schools, moves and techniques. I hope this makes sense.

Y!A will not do it, Trust me guys I know. I am a SB regular (under a different name) and they have said countless times they are not adding categories. Plus a petition will not work. They have SB threads that have hundreds and hundreds of people that agree that the Y!AT never even looks review for the future of Y!A I disagree with the idea that we need two different categories any ways. First this section is super small. They have categories that get questions asked almost 100 times per minute. What does this get, maybe 100 per day. After the "top ten answerer's " was updated (which took two years) there were categories that had their top that only had 2 BA's in the category. They said they were going to get rid of these sections but never have. MMA and MA have more in common than they have that separate them. Also I want to hear how people actually think this would make things better. You have countless people on here that say hapkido is better than karate or that BJJ is better than Judo. Or that Tai Chi would beat. This would not solve that problem at all. Hey if it helps so I don't have to read about people wanting to shoot their Ki at people maybe. This would also promote the war between the two even more. You would get "kid masters " going on to the MMA section and talking crap about how they could kill any MMA fighter and then you would also get the tuff noobs coming on the TMA section talking how tough they are compared to any TMA person. also please read all of the answer by judomofo to this same question asked by one of my non MMA contacts answers.yahoo.com/ question/ index;_ylt= Al3AWebit4jdgMs05ow5G5Dsy6IX;_ylv= 3?qid= 20080423095450AAYoKJ5 pleae read the whole thing Edit: Well the Y!AT already closed the thread and you really did not get any reply. I know how troubling this section can get. I have cut my time damn near in half because of all the B.S. that goes on here. But the thing is if we want a better section we have to MAKE it a better section. Y!A has what is called community moderation (CM). We can change this section around if we wanted to.

Are you serious? this would be the dumbest section ever. Martial arts section is big enough to even encompass MMA. if you think about it, MMA is a term used to describe the practice of one or more martial arts. Taking MMA to its own section means that your already alienating this section from MA thinking that it is its own martial art, which it is not. dont tell me that you think MMA is BJJ, Muay Thai, boxing, and wrestling? because technichally Judo and Taekwondo combined are MMA. taichi and wrestling are MMA. get the picture? PS: you guys can talk about MMA here too. Matches, competitions, rules they are all part of MMA and your more than free to discuss them here. if you want a place where they have dedicated forums for posting tournaments, rules, new updates on UFC then go to Bullshido.net or UFC.com. Y answers is about asking questions and having someone who knows answer your question. MMA is not its own martial art, it does not own any other martial art, and MMA practitioners are also Martial arts practitioners. and dont give me the whole "the MMA section will deal with rules and blah blah blah " because when they make a section in Y answers you can ask anything pertaining to MMA. including techniques, MMA fighters, whatever is included in MMA thats what you can ask a question on. and since MMA is martial arts (just cuz it has mixed doesnt mean its in its own world) then i dont see the need for it to be separated from the Martial Arts section. Also Boxing and Wrestling have their own sections because, belive it or not, Boxing and wrestling are practiced more than MMA. infact most MMA gyms have wrestling in their programs. almost every high school in america has a wrestling program. Boxing is probably the most popular combat sport in the world, and no matter what they say boxing still brings in the crowds (think Pacquiao vs Hatton, Mayweather vs De la Hoya). Im not saying MMA is not a respectable organization, it is, but its not as popular as your making it out to be. incase your wondering, MMA gyms have Boxing programs too, thats a given. infact boxing is pretty rampant in every gym, fitness club, and probably the cheapest to train in.

I fully agree. It is time now for the two to be divided. ************************************* BE SURE to sign the petition found at the link the asker posted. Comments here alone will do no good. Y/ A has stated in the past that the martial arts section is no big enough to be divided. It has grown a good deal in the last year. If enough sign the petition, perhaps Y/ A will take another look at the issue.

Sorry i have to agree with Neo MMA is a combination of arts. it is not a stand alone style. to many ppl say they study MMA, and i know a few who cant tell me what their MMA is made up of. don't get me wrong i love MMA and i will be happy when my teacher tell me i'm ready for a fight in the cage. besides ppl have been at this before Y.A. is not going to do it. they said it once and they will say it again.

How about something more accurate like, the Real Martial Arts Section and then M "MA "? But seriously, I think a separation is in order.

Yes MMA should have their own catogery as mma think they have all the answers when in truth they don't real survival is no rules whether mma admit it or not they have rules....and how you train is how you fight !!! I'm a firm brleiver in self defence which incidedaly does'nt mean great at sparring, fighting etc,but winning by any means possible, there is a difference. Best wishes )***

Agreed, it should have its own section, I enjoy dicussion about the sport not about what techniques would win in a street fight or what style is the best for someone.
