MMA usually refers to a particular type of full contact martial arts competition, such as what you see in the UFC. A (good) MMA school is one that is going to be teaching a combination of different arts to cover all the ranges of fighting that you need to be proficient at to succeed in MMA. Most often this will break down into something like: -Boxing/ Muay Thai for striking -Wrestling or Judo for take downs, take down defense, and throws from the clinch -Muay Thai for striking (usually elbows and knees) from the clinch. -BJJ or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for fighting on the ground and using different joint locks and chokes, which are also known as "submissions " because the opponent in a competition will usually tap out or "submit " when he fears that he is about to be injured or rendered unconscious by the submission attack. Although these are the most common arts that you see in MMA, the other poster was incorrect when they said that these are the only arts used. There are many successful MMA fighters with backgrounds in different forms of Karate such as Kyokushin, and other styles such as Sambo or Sanda. A typical MMA school is focused primarily on preparing you for competition rather than self-defense. As such they won't spend a great deal of time on the most important self-defense skills like awareness/ avoidance and employing defensive weapons. On the other hand, most martial arts schools that do claim to teach self-defense do a poor job of teaching those things anyways. What MMA training and competition can give you that will help in a street fight situation is: - A good understanding of how to attack and defend at every range of unarmed combat, - Good physical conditioning to survive the fight and/ or get away, and most importantly: - Competition and hard sparring will give you an adrenaline inoculation that will help you keep your wits about you in a real dangerous situation. This mechanism is somewhat similar to how militaries use the stress of bootcamp to prepare soldiers for the greater stress of combat. This story is an example of a MMA champion who, while he might need to work on his conflict avoidance skills, was able to use his conditioning and fighting skill to survive a very dangerous situation: youtube.com/ watch?v= rOQLg7Kc8So |

They're not really mixed. It's just like 3 things. Thai, Boxing, Jujitsu and sometimes kickboxing or karate. But these guys are afraid to use other disciplines. And no MMA is not useful for street fight |

Mma is simply combining different martial arts into one style. Kickboxing, Wrestling, and Jiu Jitsu very effective for street fighting because your trained in all aspects of fighting. |
