Question: Why is mixed martial arts watered down now?
(Posted by: Azriel O on 2009-06-03 08:49:51)
Im starting not to like that shyt any more..Ppl have turned mixed martial arts into a style when it supposed to be what ever styles you learned and bringing them into the ring to see if they work..Imma martial artist myself my back ground is Jeet kune do/ Akido/ Wing chun/ Muay Boran not Muay Thai lol/ Jeet Kune Do Grappling/ Boxing..Imma True Mixed Martial Arts Warrior..Why ppl think mma is just boxing/ muay thai/ jujitsu?..Oh and one other thing when i fight in the ring i bring street situations into it i dont roll around on the ground waiting to get something i go to the ground when i see an opening but if i dont get it i jump my azz back up...In real fight im not going to be rolling on the ground waiting for somebody to kick me in my head lol |

Yeah.... it still IS a bunch of different styles. The main event of the last UFC was a boxer/ wrestler vs. a karate/ Sumo/ BJJ guy. The next Affliction main event will be between a Judo/ Sambo guy and a Catch wrestler. Here's clips of a wrestler/ TKD guy: youtube.com/ watch?v= KW2p4ra9fPM &feature= fvsr I suspect you just don't know enough about the fighters to make such a broad, sweeping statement. |

Your watching athletes compete in a sport, believe me if they wanted to fight you in a street fight, I'm sure it would look much different than what you see in the cage. |

MMA as a sport is supposed to be watered down(to use your word.) It is a sport, so the lethal moves have been removed/ made illegal. A standard of rules is in place for safety reasons. The sport of mma is not supposed to be thought of for "street fighting ". A MMA practitioner should be using a level of control not often used in life or death situations. Many things would save your life, but many techniques would get you hurt worse in a street fight. Enjoy MMA for what it is, entertainment. If you are training MMA, you should know the rules for in the ring fights, so you can crush your enemies and win many trophies. It is also a good idea to take the time to learn the out of the ring stuff too! |

I don't usually do this but (ahem) AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I've never seen a pink punching bag like the one in the vid callsign just posted. OK - to your question. I am a lot like you - TKD, MT, JKD, Combat Submission, and Boxing is my background. I always mention the styles I have studied, rather than use the term "MMA ". But really it's the same thing isn't it? I see the same thing with Muay Thai / BJJ fighters in the UFC and other orgs, which is why I love seeing fighters with unusual styles & techniques in the cage (Karo Parysian for example). I partly blame the announcers for calling every technique based on their personal experience. Frank Mir and Joe Rogan can call the same fight, and will use different terms for the same technique. Eddie Bravo would call a fight differently from Royce Gracie if you get my meaning. Anyway, my suggestion is to do what you do, and call it whatever you want. |

Where did you train muay boran, from what I know the Thai government stoped teaching Muay Boran and there isn't any schools in America, They may have just teached you muay Thai with the name Boran. And thats an awfully large number of martial arts...I think your lying |

Either from what I can remember, the few unique-styled-fighters and freakshowish fighters didn't do very well in the UFC from its beginnings to before Dana started revamping the leauge around 2002. Or because once certain fights happened, (including Hughes proving to Gracie what new-school, mixed-trained-fighters can do when they don't play into old-school, single minded games) the big main MA.s styles in the UFC were subliminally pushed into the minds of the next two generations of fighters dedicated to getting into the UFC, these include Muay T., Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, and BJJ. |

MMA hasn't changed all that much, people just realize that "street fighting " isn't going to win you a fight when there are people like Anderson Silva who can submit you or knock you out or just beat the shit out of you. Street fighting wouldn't work anymore, you'll just get taken down and submitted. Not there is anything wrong with streetfighting, it is entertaining. Muay Thai is very effective, which is why people are training in it, I'm sure some of these people in the UFC trained in the very same things as you have, but the Muay Thai and Jujitsu are just going to be more predominate because they're more effective. And it's not so easy to just "jump your azz back up " when you're on the ground with someone like BJ Penn or Anderson Silva. |
