Question: Does this sound like a good karate school?
(Posted by: maukie123 on 2010-01-16 21:06:16)
It is shotokan karate and the instructor said if I sign a 12 month contract he will guarantee me a black belt by the end of the contract? He said he would dedicate a lot of time to teaching me directly with one on one tuition because the school is small. What do you guys think? Am I right to think this sounds fishy? thanks in advance for your help |

Never sign contracts and do full contact styles of karate instead. |

Dont do it. It takes much longer then one year for a black belt. I used to teach american tae kwon do and have seen many schools that only do it for the money. They have 7 year old kids with black belts so that means the test students for money not for actual teaching. The average time, even one on one teachings, for a black belt is about 4 years. |

Yup, don't go for it. But if he allow you to train for some period of time until he can be trust then it would be fine but 12 month of contract is too much. They can give you black belt anytime they one but i don't think you will learn it in right way. |

Sounds very fishy to me. A lot of schools do twelve year contracts, and with the economy, I suspect that number will increase. But in my opinion no school should promise a belt, particularly a black belt. A good teacher would go over what they expect, with a promise that if you meet those expectations, you'll earn your rank. But much of that has to depend on the student. |

. STAY AWAY from any school that promises a black belt in 12 months. Sure you might get your black belt, but you will not be a black belt in the true sense of the word. I have been teaching for years and have had some excellent students but none that have ever earned a black belt in a year. I would seriously question any school that would promote some one to a black belt in that short of time. Find a traditional karate school and earn your belts. |
